A KEY TOOL FOR BREAST CANCER DEFENSE
Breast cancer represents 26% of all cancers in women; with 1,500,000 cases detected worldwide resulting in 300,000 deaths per year. Closer to home , it is estimated that 5,000 Canadian women will die this year from Breast Cancer. Health Canada estimates that one in 9 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime.
With these staggering figures, women need more effective ways to detect this killer early. Although mammography is the standard first method of detection, doctors often request a breast MRI for further diagnosis of any abnormalities discovered or in situations where mammography is ineffective.
WHY BREAST MRI
Breast MRI is invaluable for detecting, locating and staging breast cancer; as well as assessing the effect of chemotherapy, distinguishing between scar tissue and recurrent tumors, determining if a cancer has spread or for evaluating the integrity of breast implants.
Breast MRI is often required for:
- Detecting small lesions (often missed by mammography),
- Detecting abnormalities obscured by bone,
- Imaging the dense breasts of younger women,
- Imaging breasts with implants (often a problem for mammography),
- Women with a family history of breast cancer.
WHAT IS BREAST MRI
Breast MRI is a noninvasive imaging technique with no radiation exposure as it uses powerful magnetic fields for imaging. Mayfair Diagnostics’
Breast MRI offers a very safe and comfortable exam due to the open equipment design and the wide range of table adjustments possible. The dedicated breast coil provides a comfortable body position, ensuring the least amount of motion during the examination. This minimizes the need for repeat images, and along with the advanced 3D imaging, breast MRI provides excellent diagnostic capabilities.
