Mayfair Diagnostics is the first and only physician-owned private MRI and CT facility in Calgary. It is wholly owned by Radiology Consultants Associated (RCA), a group whose history in the community extends over fifty years.

Radiology Consultants Associated opened Mayfair Diagnostics in 1999 to serve the local community. We were aware that many patients were pursuing private medical options in the United States, necessitating significant travel costs and inconvenience. By offering a local choice to Calgarians , we could provide an important service to the community while attracting and maintaining talented radiologists to the area.

The history of Radiology Consultants Associated actually reaches back to 1911, when Calgary's first X-ray machine was installed at the Holy Cross Hospital. At the time, X-ray technology was still very new, and many believed radiology to be nothing more than a passing fad. Nevertheless, the technology captured the interest of Dr. William McGuffin, a general surgeon who was soon appointed to run the machine. Having no experience in radiology, Dr. McGuffin learned on the job, strengthening his skills by attending radiology conferences and courses in other cities. Then, during WWI, a second doctor in the city began to provide X-ray services. Dr. Walter Quint was engaged to run the new X-ray facility for the Soldiers Civil Resettlement Board at the Colonel Belcher Hospital. Doctors McGuffin and Quint were Calgary's first and second radiologists, respectively.

Both doctors soon started their own private radiology practices, separately serving the imaging needs of Calgarians for roughly three decades. During this time, Dr. McGuffin founded and served as president of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the Canadian Association of Radiologists. In 1947, after a long and illustrious career, Dr. McGuffin was joined by Dr. John Porter and Dr. Douglas Florendine. That same year, Dr. Quint retired and his successful practice was taken over by Dr. Kenneth Symington. Both practices grew, attracting excellent radiologists.

In 1977, the Porter Florendine Group and the Symington Group merged to form Radiology Consultants Associated, bringing together two long-established radiological practices. Radiology Consultants Associated later acquired the radiographic facilities of the Acadia/Fairview/Willowpark/Lake Bonavista group of family practitioners, and the radiology practice of Doctors Bleik and Young.

As Calgary's first group of radiologists, we've been offering state-of-the-art medical imaging technology and specialized radiology services to our patients, for many years. Our founders were Calgary's first radiologists, in 1911 and 1916.
